Your right
Ask for a full refund
- It's within 30 days of delivery, so the short-term right to reject applies: you can ask for a full refund, not just a repair (Consumer Rights Act 2015, s.20 and s.22).
- The shop must refund within 14 days of agreeing, and can't charge you for returning it.
✉️ 2. Your letter to the shop
🧭 What to do next
- Take or send the item back with the receipt, gift receipt or bank statement (proof of purchase), and the letter.
- Keep photos of the fault and a copy of everything you send.
- No reply in 14 days? Contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline. For a credit card purchase over £100, claim from the card company.

Questions people ask
Can I return a faulty Christmas present?+
Yes. Within 30 days of delivery the buyer is entitled to a full refund (the short-term right to reject). After that, the shop can repair or replace it first.
Can I get a refund on a present I don't like?+
Only if the shop's returns policy allows it, or if it was bought online or by phone and you're within 14 days of delivery.
Can the person I gave it to return it?+
Legally the rights belong to the buyer, but with a gift receipt most shops let the recipient exchange it. For a refund on a faulty item the buyer may need to be involved.
Does the shop have to pay for postage?+
For faulty goods, yes: you shouldn't pay to return them. For an online order cancelled because you changed your mind, you may have to pay return postage if the terms say so.
