1. How did you pay?
What went wrong?
Your best route
Ask your bank for a chargeback
- The item cost £100 or less, so Section 75 does not apply, but chargeback does.
- Chargeback is a card scheme rule, not a law. Most banks ask you to claim within 120 days of the payment or of the date the goods were due.
✉️ 2. Your claim letter to the card company
🧭 What to do next
- Ask the trader to put it right first, and keep their reply (or the date they ignored you).
- Send the letter to your card company (most have an online disputes form; paste the letter in). Attach receipts, photos and messages.
- Rejected, or no answer after 8 weeks? Complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service. It's free.

Questions people ask
What is Section 75?+
Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 makes your credit card company equally responsible with the seller if something you bought goes wrong. It covers single items costing over £100 and up to £30,000 that you paid for, even partly, on a credit card.
What is a chargeback?+
A chargeback asks your bank to reverse a card payment under Visa, Mastercard or Amex rules. It works for debit and credit cards and any amount, but it is not a legal right and banks usually want you to claim within 120 days.
Does Section 75 work if I paid through PayPal?+
Usually not, because PayPal sits between you and the seller. Use PayPal Buyer Protection (within 180 days) first, then ask your card provider about a chargeback.
What if my claim is rejected?+
Ask the card company for a final response letter, then complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service. It's free and the bank must follow its decision.
