Your right
Ask the shop for a goodwill exchange
- There's no legal right to return a present that isn't faulty when it was bought in a shop.
- Many shops still take returns with a receipt or gift receipt, often until mid-January for Christmas presents. Check their returns policy and ask politely.
๐ The legal rights belong to the person who bought it. The letter says you're writing on their behalf. With a gift receipt most shops will deal with you directly.

๐งญ What to do next
- Take or send the item back with the receipt, gift receipt or bank statement (proof of purchase), and the letter.
- Keep photos of the fault and a copy of everything you send.

Answer: you don't need the receipt itself, just proof of purchase, such as the buyer's bank or card statement or order email. The legal rights belong to the person who bought it, so ask them for the proof, or ask them to make the claim.
A gift receipt lets most shops deal with you directly, usually for an exchange or store credit. For faulty goods the buyer's rights still apply in full: a full refund within 30 days of delivery.
Questions people ask
Can I return a faulty Christmas present?+
Yes. Within 30 days of delivery the buyer is entitled to a full refund (the short-term right to reject). After that, the shop can repair or replace it first.
Can I get a refund on a present I don't like?+
Only if the shop's returns policy allows it, or if it was bought online or by phone and you're within 14 days of delivery.
Can the person I gave it to return it?+
Legally the rights belong to the buyer, but with a gift receipt most shops let the recipient exchange it. For a refund on a faulty item the buyer may need to be involved.
Does the shop have to pay for postage?+
For faulty goods, yes: you shouldn't pay to return them. For an online order cancelled because you changed your mind, you may have to pay return postage if the terms say so.
